Program Enhancements
-
To supplement academic curriculum and instruction, The Vanguard School incorporates a number of program enhancements to ensure the education and development of each student is well-rounded and comprehensive.
Art
The art program at The Vanguard School nurtures creativity in each student, building skills and self-confidence through the artistic process. Art instruction at the Elementary School level is geared toward familiarizing students with how to use art materials and have fun doing so. Projects are seasonal and align with classroom curriculum. Students work with a wide variety of media, learning basic art elements such as color. They are introduced to famous artists from America as well as the art of other cultures. Student work is displayed often on bulletin boards throughout the year and in a yearly art show.
Educational Technology
At The Vanguard School, students are taught to increase their computer literacy and become prepared for a technology-driven world. Elementary School students use PCs with educational programs and Microsoft applications to develop practical computer skills and supplement lessons taught in their classrooms. Students learn how to use various educational programs independently. The Vanguard School also has an interactive white board in every classroom and access to iPads; there is also a computer lab and computers in every classroom in the Elementary School. This advanced technology allows for computer-based instruction while enabling students to remain engaged in learning.
Media Center
The Elementary School has its own elementary-level library which features reading and reference materials and computer access to the Alexandria catalog, online subscription databases and the Internet. Students come for regularly-scheduled classes for lessons in library science as well as a book exchange. The Media Center is staffed by a full-time Librarian and one assistant and is open 8:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday during the school year.
Music
The goal of The Vanguard School’s music program is to provide a multi-sensory and holistic music environment that provides each student with the opportunity to explore their musical creativity, enhance self-esteem and self-awareness, expand knowledge of music concepts and develop performance skills. Students work to promote better understanding of various styles of music and integrate academic core-curriculum subjects into music activities when appropriate. Students engage in individual and group activities as well as public performances to incorporate learned skills into a positive social environment.
Physical Education
Physical education is a regular part of each student’s educational program at The Vanguard School. Classes take place in the Musser Gymnasium which is complete with ample equipment for learning a multitude of physical activities. Our experienced, certified physical education staff plan developmentally-appropriate lessons designed to meet the diverse needs of our student population.
Physical education staff works closely with our physical therapists to develop individualized programs where needed. In addition to the regular physical education curriculum, several special activities afford opportunities for our students to practice and enjoy their skills including an Annual Elementary School Gym Show and the Mileage Club, a walking program for students and staff. When the goals of the physical education curriculum are achieved, students will be prepared to choose physical activities for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction.
