Position Summary

Posted:  12/22/2017 ---- The Vanguard School has immediate openings for Classroom Aides in our Elementary School program and in our High School program.  

If you love learning and have worked with children with autism, work with us!  We are looking for patient, caring individuals with experience working in a special education classroom who want to make a difference in our students' lives.

Our Classroom Aides support certified teachers with preparing instructional materials, implementing lesson plans, reinforcing instruction/tutoring, monitoring student behavior, and documenting student progress throughout the school day.  Classroom Aides with PDE Special Education certification receive additional compensation and, depending on program needs, may also teach a daily instructional class.

These positions are full-time, School Year positions with an option to work during a 5-week summer ESY program.  We offer paid health and dental insurance, paid personal and sick days, and opportunities for professional development. Tuition reimbursement of up to $2000 per year is also available for college courses in special education. Safety care training is provided.  
School Year work hours are 7:45AM to 3:45PM, Monday to Friday.  
Summer hours are also available during our 5-week ESY Program.
Position Requirements
  1. Two years of college or high school graduate with two years of experience working with children with special needs in an educational or other organized setting. 
  2. Paraeducator training is preferred.
  3. Ability to engage intellectually and physically in all components of the educational process.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all constituents (administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and others).
  5. Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  6. Ability to use computers and perform clerical skills at a proficient level.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Actively assist in implementing lesson plans, reinforcing instruction/tutoring, and documenting student progress of assigned students throughout the school day. 
  2. Observe, monitor, and redirect behavior of assigned students during regular classroom time, special class times, transition periods, and on field trips according to school and program procedures. Maintain accurate records on student progress and behavior for school programs and outside agencies as required. 
  3. Accompany assigned students to art, music, physical education, computer classes, and special events and provide assistance to the specialty teacher during class as needed.
  4. Accompany assigned students to individual and group therapy sessions as needed.
  5. Assist the teacher with testing, recordkeeping, and progress monitoring for assigned students.
  6. Under the teacher’s direction, communicate with parents and staff regarding student progress. Participate in interdisciplinary and inter-agency meetings as required.
  7. Provide a nurturing environment for all students. Enforce school policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner to ensure the health and safety of all students. Maintain a safe, clean, and organized learning environment.
  8. Supervise students in the absence of the teacher whenever necessary.
  9. Serve as a mentor for new staff members and a source of information and help for substitute teachers assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  10. Maintains a professional, confidential and ethical relationship with colleagues, students and parents at all times.
  11. Attends and actively participates in all faculty meetings, in-service meetings, and other meetings as required.
  12. Maintains proper certification for assignment and remains educationally informed in all related areas including PDE regulations and state/national standards through continued professional study and attending workshops and conferences. 
  13. Actively participate in at least 20 hours of staff development activities directly related to the job assignment during each school year.
  14. Performs related duties, special assignments and projects as assigned.
