Elementary Students and Staff Kick Off Vanguard Values Program
On Friday, September 20th, students and staff held a Vanguard Values kickoff event at the elementary school. Each class created a poster displaying all of the Vanguard Values and the posters were displayed throughout the Brutten Building.
The Vanguard Values Program is an integral part of the PA Department of Education’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system. PBIS is a proactive, multi-tiered approach to fostering appropriate student behavior while promoting academic success. The program emphasizes the importance of creating positive, predictable, equitable, and safe learning environments where all students can thrive.
At Vanguard, the core PBIS values of **Respect**, **Responsibility**, **Readiness**, and **Safety** are at the heart of everything the community does—both in and out of the classroom. As part of the program, students are awarded Vanguard dollars for demonstrating these values, which they can redeem for items at the school store. The Vanguard Values Store also received a new makeover this year thanks to Art Teacher, Mary Campbell, who painted a colorful storefront scene on the outside walls. Be sure to enjoy the artwork the next time you visit the Brutten Building!
Lisa Wood, Head of School and Director of Education, remarked on the impact of these guiding principles: “Our Vanguard values of respect, responsibility, readiness, and safety shape everything we do. These values are not just words; they are lived daily by our students, staff, and community. These principles have fostered a culture of kindness and resilience, where students feel supported, learn from mistakes, and strive for excellence.”
When implemented effectively, PBIS has been shown to improve social-emotional competence, academic achievement, and overall school climate. It also supports teacher wellbeing, creating a healthier work environment. Vanguard’s commitment to these values has significantly enhanced both academic outcomes and the school’s sense of inclusivity.
Wood added, “Our shared values have not only improved academic results but have also created a more empathetic and inclusive environment. This ensures that every student feels valued and empowered to reach their full potential. The impact is visible in the confidence and character of our students, who leave Vanguard not just as successful learners but as responsible citizens ready to contribute positively to society.”
