CWS Staff Spotlight - Alex Mizok

Alexandra “Alex” Mizok has been working as an Employment Specialist for VFES’ employment program, Customized Workforce Solutions (CWS), for one year.  She hails from Scranton, PA and had worked in group homes as a Direct Support Professional for several years when she relocated to the Philadelphia area.  Following her move, she worked at a local school, but her passion for working with people with disabilities led her to a career at VFES.

As a CWS Employment Specialist, Alex provides individualized employment support to adults with disabilities.  She has been working with one of her participants, Jason Young, for several months now.  She helped Jason at his first job placement as a cart collector at a local grocery store.  After one year, Jason wanted to try something new, but his manager was not willing to let him train as a cashier.  Knowing how important job growth was to Jason, Alex helped him get hired at Wendy’s restaurant in Paoli 3 months ago.  As a store associate at Wendy’s, Jason is happily working on a cash register and is thriving in his new position.

“Employers shouldn’t be afraid to give people with disabilities a chance to try something new because you never know what someone is capable of,” said Alex.  She was pleased that Jason was so committed to challenging himself at work that he was willing to change jobs to realize his goals. She explained that she uses work experiences to help her participants develop and adapt to different personalities and work environments so they can find success.  “There are opportunities out there for everyone,” Alex said, “and natural supports can be built within those opportunities.”

Alex lives in Malvern, PA with her two cats, Enik and Jack, and enjoys spending time with her loved ones in her free time.

CWS is a waiver-supported employment service of Valley Forge Educational Services.  For more information, please visit http://www.vfes.net/cws.
