…Paoli…VFES Director of Conferences and Training, Maria Kreiter, presented two well-attended and well-received sessions at the Council for Exceptional Children’s national conference in Nashville April 22-23. Both sessions concerned strategies and frameworks for effectively teaching children with exceptionalities.

Kreiter’s April 23 session, “Course at a Glance: Design, Intervene and Align the General Education Curriculum,” introduced participants to a curriculum development component designed to synopsize the alignment between general education content standards and Response to Intervention (RtI) instructional concepts for the special education classroom. The tool covers scope, sequence, and pacing, and helps teachers match appropriate curriculum content with student abilities, classify available resources, and structure assessment.

“The Principal Chain: Linking Special Education Success with Professional Learning,” which Kreiter delivered April 22, discussed the value of principals taking on an enhanced instructional leadership role. The session detailed the positive gains that resulted from VFES’  decision to link staff development to CEC’s 10 standard competencies under the leadership of its school principals.

Maria Kreiter, Director of Conferences & Training, has worked in education for 18 years in private, public, and university settings. Previously a Staff Development Specialist for the School District of Philadelphia, Maria participated in and graduated from the National Staff Development Council’s Philadelphia Academy in 2007. She is an adjunct instructor for Temple University’s College of Education and a certified teacher, curriculum and instruction supervisor, and principal. She is currently completing the Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility.
