VFES Curbs Summer Learning Loss For Special Needs Students With Personalized Summer Programs

PAOLI, Pa.-March 1, 2011-Valley Forge Educational Services (www.vfes.net), a leading expert in educational solutions for young children, adolescents and pre-21 adults, today announced its 2011 Summer MattersTM (www.summermatters.org) program specifically designed to create a unique, individualized summer learning experience for special education students.

“Research shows that students can lose one to three months’ worth of learning over summer vacation – something that can have a lasting impact on their educational development,” stated Osborne Abbey, CEO, Valley Forge Educational Services. “At Valley Forge Educational Services, we believe that a small, individualized program with a balance of socialization and academics is the best approach to summer learning for students with special education needs.”

This year, Summer MattersTM, Valley Forge Educational Services’ summer division, will offer three unique summer programs:

  • SUMMER L.I.F.E. (Learning Is for Everyone) is an experiential learning program offered to youth ages 6-21, with and without special needs. This program provides children, adolescents and young adults with a varied cross-section of “real world” experiences that allows them to generalize and transfer academic, social and behavioral skills in a number of community settings.
  • The Summer at Crossroads program is a five-week comprehensive academic program for children entering Kindergarten through 6th grade that reinforces reading, writing, math, speech/language instruction and kindergarten readiness.  Students are taught step-by-step strategies for organizing and problem-solving through direct instruction using multi-sensory activities.
  • The Extended School Year (ESY) Program at The Vanguard School is offered to current students and students in neighboring school districts, ages 6 to 21, who are eligible for ESY services. The program is designed to maintain skills and to reduce regression during the summer months.
