L to R: Vanguard High School students Justin Lucas, Janita Vazquez, Daniela Quezada and teacher Cynthia Watkins hold up some of the more than 90 jackets and coats they collected during the School’s February coat drive.
Paoli, PA…Students at The Vanguard School collected and donated over 90 new and gently used children’s coats and jackets, as well as many hats, scarves and gloves, as part of a winter coat drive to keep needy children warm this winter. The coats and accessories were donated to Cradles to Crayons in Conshohocken, which provides clothing, toys and other equipment to local children ages birth to 12.
The coat drive was conducted by Cynthia Watkins’ class under the direction of Michelle Heary, a one-to-one aide at the School. Students helped decorate boxes that were donated by Boscov’s and distributed them around campus to serve as collection points.
Community service opportunities are an important part of student life at The Vanguard School, which serves students with exceptionalities including autism spectrum disorders, neurological impairments and social-emotional difficulties.
“Many of our students realize that they are afforded extra help in their lives to be successful, and the opportunity for them to help others is not always available for them,” said Cynthia Watkins. “This helps give them a sense of pride and accomplishment that they have been able to help others less fortunate than themselves.”
