Position Summary

VFES seeks responsible, caring adults with experience teaching (or assisting) in a special education setting to support The Vanguard School.  Experience working with students diagnosed with autism, neurological impairments and/or emotional disorders is preferred.  Our per diem substitute teachers must have PA teaching certificate in Special Education. Our per diem substitute aides do not need certification.

Per Diem Substitutes are called on an “as needed” basis so you can work when you are available.  Most work days can be scheduled in advance.  Hours are generally 8am to 3:45 pm on assigned days; however, times may vary.
 
2016-2017 Substitute Pay Rates:

Certified Teachers: $125 per day                  Classroom Aides: $85 per day


Job Description 
  1. Reports to the Substitute Coordinator and/or Program Supervisor upon arrival.
  2. Reviews and implements daily lesson plans for assigned students. Follows classroom and program schedules during the school day. Provides an accurate reporting of student progress at the end of the day.
  3. Supervises students at all times in accordance with policies for student health and safety.
  4. Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior in classroom, hallways, and during lunch and recess periods. Clearly defines expectations and limits, and encourages student self-discipline.
  5. Maintains a professional, confidential, and ethical relationship with supervisors, colleagues, and students at all times.
  6. Follows established procedures and policies, and federal and state regulations in all matters of employment.
  7. Performs related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications 
For Per Diem Substitute Teachers:
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Special Education.
  2. Current, valid Pennsylvania teaching certification in Special Education.
  3. Ability to recognize the individuality and uniqueness of each student and treat him/her with respect and dignity.
  4. Ability to engage intellectually and physically in all components of the educational process.
  5. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and students.
 For Per Diem Substitute Aides:
  1. Two years of college, or high school graduate with 2 years’ experience working with children with special needs in an organized setting. Paraeducator training is a plus!
  2. Ability to recognize the individuality and uniqueness of each student and treat him/her with respect and dignity.
  3. Ability to engage intellectually and physically in all components of the educational process.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and students.
