…Paoli, PA…Liberty AMBUCS (www.libertyambucs.org) based in Norristown, PA, has made a $1000.00 donation to underwrite the development of a therapeutic listening (TL) program at The Vanguard School, a division of Valley Forge Educational Services located in Malvern, Pennsylvania. The Therapeutic Listening Program will be implemented by the Occupational Therapy Department under the guidance of Wendy Levin, MS, OTR/L who has worked at Vanguard for seventeen years.

VFES’ Vanguard School provides state of the art educational and clinical treatment programs for students who have an array of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders, neurological impairments and social-emotional difficulties.  Sensory processing differences, poor organizational skills, delayed motor skills and difficulty with social interaction are typical side bar issues associated with such diagnoses. Research has shown that a therapeutic listening program along with a sensory diet can make a substantial positive impact on the behavior of children with sensory processing differences and visual motor impairment.

Dr. Kathleen Wilkins, VFES Director of Clinical Services said, “We very much appreciate this generous donation from Liberty AMBUCS. The implementation of a Therapeutic Listening program at Vanguard will serve to enhance the occupational therapy curriculum we currently offer our students.” The new Therapeutic Listening program will require coordination between school and home for students involved.  Benefits from the program are expected to reflect improvement in the students’ attention, organizational behavior, self regulation, postural control, bilateral coordination, motor planning, social skills and visual motor integration (i.e. drawing, writing). Liberty AMBUCS Chapter President Turrey Kepler states, “We have donated AmTrykes to the school in the past and are very pleased to be able to continue supporting Vanguard’s therapy programs with this donation.”
